Sunday in New York *** (1963, Rod Taylor, Jane Fonda, Cliff Robertson) – Classic Movie Review 7557

Director Peter Tewkesbury’s likeable 1963 romantic comedy boasts a good cast in Cliff Robertson, Rod Taylor, Jane Fonda, Robert Culp, Jo Morrow and Jim Backus, and a decent screenplay by Norman Krasna, who adapts his Broadway comedy about virginity as a surefire laughter raiser on the big screen.

The pickings are fairly slim, but the appealing cast does help a lot, particularly Fonda as the sweet young woman Eileen Tyler, who wants finally to lose her virginity at age 22 as a Sunday afternoon sport, and Robertson as her sex-crazed airline pilot brother, Adam. Taylor (as Mike Mitchell) and Culp (as Eileen’s ex, Russ Wilson) are less comfortably cast in such fluff.

The composer of the film’s score, Peter Nero, who writes some snazzy jazzy music, appears as himself in a cameo at his own club, Club Nero. He was a Golden Globe nominee for Best Song for ‘Sunday in New York’ (Carroll Coates, lyrics).

Always a B-lister, it is a kind of blink and you’ll miss it movie, which probably would be totally forgotten without the young Fonda, but with her, it is still sweet.

Also in the cast are Alvy Moore, Robert Williams, Sam Flint and Rayford Barnes.
