Crazy but canny documentary film-maker Morgan Spurlock puts his fit body to the test on a 30-day burger binge at McDonald’s: three Big Mac meals a day, always taking the Super Size if offered, in his super 2004 film Super Size Me. And, yes, ‘I’m lovin’ it!’
The doses of salt, sugar and fat upset his liver, heart, weight and blood pressure big time, as Spurlock scares his doctors Daryl Isaacs and Lisa Ganjhu and girlfriend Alexandra Jamieson, a healthy chef. Spurlock’s documentary is hilarious and informative, hitting the Mactarget bull’s eye. Fat chance you’ll eat anything but salad after!
Spurlock gained 25lbs body weight, which took a year and a half, the first month on his girlfriend’s strict vegan diet, to correct and get him back to his usual 185lbs. She published her diet book in 2005.
Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary feature, Super Size Me cost $65,000 and took just under $30million at the box office.
Spurlock got the idea when he was at his parents’ house for Thanksgiving, and saw a news item on TV about a lawsuit by two teenage girls alleging that McDonald’s had caused their obesity.
Documentary-maker Morgan Spurlock, the director of films including Super Size Me and Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?, died on May 23, 2024, aged 53. His family announced that he ‘passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends in New York from complications of cancer.’
