Regina Hall is great as Lisa, the general manager at a Hooters-style fast food joint called Double Whammies, owned by sleazy Cubby (James Le Gros). Lisa is really brilliant at her job, which she loves. She is caring and capable, but the onslaughts of increasingly outrageous events of one difficult day batter her sideways.
Write-director Andrew Bujalski’s Support the Girls looks like an ensemble sitcom movie, Cheers-style, and it is. But Regina Hall turns it into her solo show. Like her character, she’s better than everything and everyone around her, with the other performers, good though they are, merely acting as foils to her star turn.
Maybe there is nothing particularly new or fresh here, but it is fast and funny, as well as warm and quirky, managing a nice bitter-sweet taste and after-taste. Like Regina Hall, Support the Girls is real likeable. It comes on tough but it’s got a sweet underlay of vulnerability and sensibility.
The first hour is perhaps the best, but it’s all good and tasty.
