Writer-director Jerry Belson’s 1987 American comedy film Surrender stars Sally Field, Michael Caine, Steve Guttenberg, Peter Boyle, Julie Kavner, Louise Lasser, Iman and Jackie Cooper in his final film role.

You may well feel like conceding under the headlock of this story depicting the complicated courtship of a wealthy novelist called Sean Stein (Caine) and a poor painter named Daisy Morgan (Field)?

But the most attractive cast and Caine’s charm make up for the over-familiarity of the yarn and the lack of voltage in the direction.

Writer-director Belson must take the blame for the deficiencies, but its cynicism and wicked sense of fun, as well as the amusing performances of a practised cast, help to see it though.

Also in the cast are Michael A Andrews, Jerry Lazarus, Tony Borgia, and Paddi Edwards.

It was a critical and box office flop, costing $15 million and taking only $5,711,976 at the box office.

It was released on 9 October 1987.

It runs 94 minutes.

It was mostly shot in Stateline, Nevada, in November 1986.

The cast are Sally Field as Daisy Morgan, Michael Caine as Sean Stein, Steve Guttenberg as Marty, Peter Boyle as Jay, Jackie Cooper as Daisy’s father Ace Morgan, Julie Kavner as Ronnie, Louise Lasser as Joyce, Iman as Hedy, Michael A Andrews, Jerry Lazarus, Tony Borgia, and Paddi Edwards.

Iman was married to David Bowie from 1992 until his death in 2016.
