Director Angela Pope’s urgent 1987 British TV drama film Sweet as You Are stars Liam Neeson as a married college lecturer who finds out that he is carrying the HIV AIDS virus after having had an extra-marital one night stand affair with a student. He tells his wife, who has to try to come to terms with his infidelity and her own risk of the disease.
Writer William Nicholson’s intelligent and sombre drama observes how the discovery corrodes a previously happy marriage.
There is a masterclass in pained looks and silences from Neeson as the tortured husband, and Miranda Richardson as his wife does enough acting for both of them.
Also in the cast are Alex Pakenham, Philip McGough, Gillian Raine, Philip Bird, Judi Lamb, Caroline Holdaway, Jay Byrd, Graham Turner, and Angus Kennedy.
Sweet as You Are is produced by Ruth Caleb at the BBC for the Screen Two series of films.
