The 18-year-old Jason Bateman takes over from Michael J Fox as his character Scott Howard’s college boxing werewolf cousin Todd Howard, a struggling teenager who turns into a wolf, in director Christopher Leitch’s 1987 Teen Wolf Too, the limp sequel to the surprisingly big-hit 1985 teen comedy Teen Wolf.
Jason Bateman makes his film debut and is an appealing student athlete hairy hero, while Kim Darby as Professor Brooks, John Astin as Dean Dunn and Paul Sand as Coach Finstock are assets too, and all of them try hard with the weak material they are offered. But this is a lame comedy and, without the original’s only real asset, Fox, it more or less croaks and dies.
The problem is the unimaginative, recycled screenplay by Tim Kring [R Timothy Kring], based on a story and characters by Joseph Loeb III [Jeph Loeb] and Matthew Weisman.
James Hampton and Mark Holton, as Harold Howard and Chubby, are the only actors to reprise their roles from Teen Wolf. Also in the cast are Estee Chandler, Robert Neary, Stuart Fratkin, Beth Miller, Rachel Sharp, David Burton, William H Burton Jr, and Kathleen Freeman.
Teen Wolf Too is directed by Christopher Leitch, runs 95 minutes, is made by Atlantic Entertainment Group, is released by Atlantic Releasing Corporation (1987) (US) and Entertainment (UK), is written by Tim Kring [R Timothy Kring], based on a story and characters by Joseph Loeb III [Jeph Loeb] and Matthew Weisman, is shot by Jules Brenner, produced by Kent Bateman, scored by Mark Goldenberg and is designed by Peg McClellan.
It cost little – $3,000,000 – and grossed a bit – $7,888,703 in the US, so it must have made a profit, but it is in the bottom rated movies on the IMDb.
It is filmed at Pomona College, Claremont, California.
The characters of Coach Finstock and Stiles return from Teen Wolf but are re-cast with Paul Sand and Stuart Fratkin.
