Greta Thyssen plays the voluptuous wife of the secretive scientist Dr Charles Girard (Francis Lederer) in director Gerardo de Leon’s entertaining Z-movie version of H G Wells’s The Island of Dr Moreau. Richard Derr plays William Fitzgerald, who is shipwrecked on their island.
Girard surgically transforms a panther into a man-like creature who escapes and goes on a killing spree.
The screenplay is written by Harry Paul Harber, partly inspired by H G Wells’s book.
Shot entirely in Manila, Philippines, it is the first in a series of Filipino-American horror movies produced by Eddie Romero with similar titles and use of similar locations known as the Blood Island series.
When you saw it in cinemas, a warning bell would sound before the horrific scenes.
It is also known as Blood Creature, Creature from Blood Island, The Gory Creatures, Island of Terror and Gore Creature.
Greta Thyssen, Danish blonde bombshell of the 1950s and 1960s, died aged 90. She was Marilyn Monroe’s double in Bus Stop and appeared in Accused of Murder, Terror Is a Man, Three Blondes in His Life and Journey to the Seventh Planet, as well as in the Three Stooges short films Quiz Whizz, Pies and Guys and Sappy Bull Fighters.
