In 2087, a moon-based nightclub owner is targeted by space gangsters plotting to profit from his hard work.
Directed by Ron Underwood, Eddie Murphy’s 2002 sci-fi comedy is ambitious and has a good cast but Neil Cuthbert’s screenplay is none too funny and the movie poorly made, with weak special effects that defy its big budget.
It was an incredibly costly cinema flop. On a $100 million budget, it took only $4,400,000 at the US box office. Net losses, inflation adjusted, are $127,300,000. What happened to all Murphy’s fans?
On the plus side are Rosario Dawson as an aspiring singer and Randy Quaid as a sex-crazed robot, helping to produce a few laughs.
Also in the exceptional cast are Joe Pantoliano, Jay Mohr, Luis Guzmán, James Rebhorn (1948–2014), Peter Boyle (1935–2006), Burt Young, Miguel A Nuñez Jr, Pam Grier, John Cleese, Victor Varnado, Illeana Douglas and Jacynthe René.
