The pleasant but mild opening chapter of the much-loved C S Lewis saga sees the four Pevensie kids going through a wardrobe to the magical kingdom of Narnia, where they learn of their destiny to free it with the guidance of the mystical lion Aslan (voice of Liam Neeson).
Georgie Henley, William Moseley, Skandar Keynes and Anna Popplewell star as Lucy, Peter, Edmund and Susan Pevensie, with Tilda Swinton enjoying herself enormously as the White Witch, and so apparently are James McAvoy as Mr Tumnus and Jim Broadbent as Professor Kirke.
Lavish sets and costumes, imaginative makeup and fine visual effects all help to bring this wonderful story to life.
It won a 2006 Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup (Howard Berger, Tami Lane) and the BAFTA Film Award for Best Make Up/Hair (Howard Berger, Greg Nicotero, Nikki Gooley).
It is followed by The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) and The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).
