The Day Shall Come (2019, Marchánt Davis, Anna Kendrick, Denis O’Hare, Andrel McPherson, Miles Robbins, Kayvan Novak) – Movie Review

Marchánt Davis stars in the 2019 crime comedy The Day Shall Come as poor, nutty Miami projects preacher Moses, who is offered an arms deal for the cash to save his family from eviction by Reza (Kayvan Novak), a man who turns out to work for the FBI, who plan to turn Moses into a terrorist and arrest him. Moses is both a revolutionary and a pacifist, so this unpredictable story could go either way.

Unfortunately, Chris Morris’s dark, surrealist political, religious and social satire continually misfires. Its idea is awkward and its realisation is clumsy and ineffective, with a lot of the jokes being either silly or just plain unfunny. It would be very hard to pull off this absurdist madcap comedy, and Morris discovers that idea big time. The comedy has potential bite but lacks warmth and heart.

The unwieldy farcical tone is its main problem, leading to a lack of good humour. Performers as skilled as Anna Kendrick and Denis O’Hare are left bumbling about as the FBI agents. Despite its unusual clear ambitions and genuine attractive weirdness, The Day Shall Come has little or no credibility as socially concerned satire and its angry messages feel divisive.
