W C Fields’s precious 1932 vintage comedy short The Dentist re-creates his stage act as the kind of dentist who fills you with dread.
Fields is on great form in this, the first and funniest of four shorts Fields made with producer Mack Sennett in a successful effort to establish himself in talkies.
Also in the cast are Marjorie Kane as Mary – Dentist’s Daughter, Arnold Gray as Arthur – The Iceman, Dorothy Granger as Miss Peppitone – Patient, Elise Cavanna as Miss Mason – Patient, Zedna Farley as Dental Assistant, Billy Bletcher as Mr Foliage – Bearded Patient, Bobby Dunn as Dentist’s Caddy, Bud Jamison as Charley Frobisher, Pete Rasch as Benford’s Tough Son and Henry Hanna.
The Dentist is directed by Leslie Pearce, runs 20 minutes, is made by Sennett, is released by Paramount, is written by W C Fields, is shot in black and white by John W Boyle, and is produced by Mack Sennett.
The Dentist (1932) is one of three W C Fields short films that came into the public domain after the copyright lapsed in the Sixties, along with The Golf Specialist (1930) and The Fatal Glass of Beer (1933).
It is followed by The Fatal Glass of Beer, The Pharmacist and The Barber Shop.
