Edgar Wallace’s 1925 novel The Fellowship of the Frog makes a fun vintage movie crime thriller and gives good opportunities to Jack Hawkins as CID man Police Captain Richard Gordon and Gordon Harker as detective sergeant Elk, who lead the case against the undercover boss of a crime ring, The Fellowship of the Frog, which is devastating the nation.
CID man Richard Gordon (Hawkins) meets and fancies Stella Bennett (Vivian Gaye), whose family are members of The Fellowship.
The screenplay by Ian Hay and Gerald Elliott is based on Ian Hay’s play version of the novel.
The Frog was popular, so a sequel was needed: The Return of the Frog occurred in 1938.
Also in the cast are Richard Ainley, Esmé Percy, Felix Aylmer, Vivian Gaye, Cyril Smith, Gordon McLeod, Julien Mitchell, and Harold Franklyn.
It runs 75 minutes.
It was released in the UK on 23 March 1937 (London).
