The Good Guys and the Bad Guys *** (1969, Robert Mitchum, George Kennedy, Martin Balsam, David Carradine) – Classic Movie Review 7429

Following Young Billy Young, director Burt Kennedy immediately teams up again with Robert Mitchum for this light-hearted 1969 follow-up Western The Good Guys and the Bad Guys, in which Mitchum plays Marshal Flagg, a creaky old lawman who pairs up with his old enemy McKay (George Kennedy) to stop a train robbery after McKay (Kennedy)’s gang has ousted him for being past it. The new leader is an unpleasant youngster named Waco (David Carradine). Guess who’s side this film is on – it’s the Old Guys.

Kennedy’s movie is a good fun, old-time minor comedy Western, sparked up with an engaging impish sense of humour and the good cast. Mitchum and Kennedy are very good value and so is Martin Balsam as the pretentious town boss, Mayor Wilker.

Also in the cast are Tina Louise, Douglas V Fowley, John Carradine, Marie Windsor, Lois Nettleton, John Davis Chandler, Dick Peabody, Kathleen Freeman, Jimmy Murphy, Garrett Lewis, Nick Dennis, David Cargo and Buddy Hackett.

The Good Guys and the Bad Guys is directed by Burt Kennedy, runs 91 minutes, is made by Seven Arts, is released by Warner Bros, is written by Ronald M Cohen and Dennis Shyrack, is shot by Harry Stradling Jr, is produced by Ronald M Cohen and Dennis Shyrack, is scored by William Lava, and is designed by Stan Jolley.
