Director Herbert Brenon’s original silent version of the great F Scott Fitzgerald novel of 1925 reportedly is enriched with captivating performances headed by Warner Baxter as the enigmatic, troubled Long Island millionaire Jay Gatsby, and Lois Wilson as Daisy Buchanan.
But this 1926 silent version is now considered a lost film because no prints are known to exist. However, the trailer has survived.
The screenplay is written by Becky Gardiner and Elizabeth Meehan based on Owen Davis’s 1926 stage play treatment of The Great Gatsby. The film was produced by Famous Players-Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures, who paid $45,000 for the film rights.
