Director Joseph M Newman’s useful 1958 release The Gunfight at Dodge City stars Joel McCrea as Bat Masterson who becomes sheriff of Dodge City and is threatened by all and sundry usual Western suspects when he tries to clean up the town. It co-stars Julie Adams, John McIntire, Richard Anderson and Nancy Gates.
When his marshal brother Ed (Harry Lauter) is murdered, Bat is elected to the job of sheriff, determined to find the killer and make Dodge safe.
McCrea’s stalwart performance, an excellent co-starring and support cast, Carl Guthrie’s striking widescreen, colour cinematography (Color by Deluxe) and a good production help a busy, old-style traditional yarn rattle along nicely.
Also in the cast are James [Jim] Westerfield, Walter Coy, Don Haggerty, Harry Lauter, Wright King, Myron Healy, Mauritz Hugo and Henry Kulky.
The Gunfight at Dodge City is directed by Joseph M Newman, runs 82 minutes, and is made by The Mirisch Company and released by United Artists. The screenplay is by Daniel B Ullman and Martin M Goldsmith, based on a story by Daniel B Ullman.
