Co-writer/ director Patrice Leconte’s 1990 The Hairdresser’s Husband [Le Mari de la Coiffeuse] is a superb comedy-drama tale of male obsession, with a perfect role for the great Jean Rochefort as Antoine, who has loved having his hair cut, boy and man, since he was snipped by a gorgeous woman just as he was approaching manhood.
Italian star Anna Galiena (born in Rome in 1949) is marvellously sensuous as the hero’s hairdresser wife, Mathilde.
This small, but perfectly formed art object is luminously filmed by cinematographer Eduardo Serra, with another huge asset in a lovely Michael Nyman score. There is so much delicate wit, wisdom and sensuality all packed in to just 82 minutes.
Also in the cast are Roland Bertin, Maurice Chevit, Philippe Clévenot, Jacques Mathou, Claude Aufaure, Albert Delpy, Henry Hocking, Ticky Holgado, Michèle Laroque, Anne-Marie Pisani, Pierre Meyrand, and Yveline Ailhaud.
