Director Nicholas Sgarro’s 1975 American biographical comedy film The Happy Hooker is cleaned up as a vehicle for surprise choice Redgrave, who is fun but slumming as the Dutch secretary turned classy hooker Xaviera Hollander, but it still contains plenty of nudity and sex.
It is a fairly entertaining, endearingly amateurish sex comedy based on Xaviera Hollander’s best-selling memoir book about her exploits as New York’s number one madam.
There are two sequels: The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington (1977) with Joey Heatherton, and The Happy Hooker Goes to Hollywood (1980) with Martine Beswicke.
The main cast are Lynn Redgrave, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Lovelady Powell, Nicholas Pryor, Elizabeth Wilson, Tom Poston, Conrad Janis, Mason Adams, Richard Lynch, George Dzundza, and Vincent Schiavelli.
Also in the cast are Denis Galik, Trish Hawkins, Pal Henry, Sharon Laughlin, Donna Mitchell, Anita Morris, Darlene Parks, Stefan Schnabel, Lee Wallace, and Florence Tarlow.
