Writer-director William Sachs’s amusingly silly and entertainingly horrible 1977 drive-in sci-fi-horror movie The Incredible Melting Man stars Alex Rebar as infected spaceman Steve West (aka The Incredible Melting Man of course), whose flesh melts incredibly after an ill-fated flight to Saturn, and then the gelatinous mass-type remains get murderous and start eating people.
Can Dr Ted Nelson (Burr DeBenning) help Steve and save the day?
The Incredible Melting Man is total trash but done with a bit of flash. Despite the low budget of $250,000, Rick Baker’s special effects are up to the mark for fantasy fans.
Also in the cast are Myron Healey, Michael Alldredge, Ann Sweeny, Lisle Wilson, Cheryl Smith [Rainbeaux Smith], Julie Drazen, Stuart Edmond Rodgers, Chris Witney, Edwin Max, Dorothy Love, Janus Blythe, Jonathan Demme, Samuel W Gelfman, Bonnie Inch, Westbrook Claridge and Detroit Tiger great Mickey Lolich with one line as First Security Guard.
The Incredible Melting Man is directed by William Sachs, runs 84 minutes, is made by American International Pictures, Dynamite Entertainment and Quartet, and is released by American International Pictures (AIP) (1977) (US) and Columbia-Warner Distributors (1977) (UK), is written by William Sachs, is shot in colour by Willy Curtis, is produced by Max J Rosenberg and Samuel W Gelfman, is scored by Arlon Ober and is designed by Michel Levesque, with special effects by Rick Baker and Harry Woolman.
