Director Arthur Rosson’s 1927 American Paramount Famous Lasky Corporation silent Western film The Last Outlaw stars Gary Cooper, Jack Luden, Betty Jewel and Herbert Prior.
It is written by John Stone and J Walter Rubin, based on a story by Richard Allen Gates.
The story is about a frontiersman, Buddy Hale (Gary Cooper), who falls in love with a pretty woman, Janet Lane (Betty Jewel), whose brother Ward (Jack Luden) is accused of murder. Buddy tries to prove Ward innocent but, when he is appointed sheriff, he is obliged to track him down and arrest him. Ward suspects that Bert Wagner (Herbert Prior) is leading a gang of cattle thieves and is shot by one of Wagner’s accomplices.
Happily a 16mm reduction positive print exists.
The cast are Gary Cooper as Sheriff Buddy Hale, Jack Luden as Ward Lane, Betty Jewel as Janet Lane, Herbert Prior as Bert Wagner, Jim Corey as Butch, Billy Butts as Chick, Hank Bell as Henchman, and Lane Chandler as Rancher.
It runs 63 minutes and was released on 2 July 1927.
