Producer-director Henry Hathaway’s 1967 British-made adventure The Last Safari is based on the novel Gilligan’s Last Elephant by Gerald Hanley, and stars Stewart Granger, Kaz Garas and Gabriella Licudi.
Jaundiced white big game hunter Miles Gilchrist (Granger) and rich, overbearing American Casey (Garas) go on a last safari to kill the elephant that attacked and killed Granger’s buddy.
Africa looks good in Technicolor, as shot in Kenya by cinematographer Ted Moore, but Granger looks bored in this too downbeat adventure yarn.
It is often reasonably entertaining, but too many clichés and muddle abound in John Gay’s screenplay, which has its moments but needs more polish and finesse.
Also in the cast are Johnny Sekka, Liam Redmond, Eugene Deckers, David Munyua, John De Villiers, Wilfred Moore, Jean Parnell, Bill Grant, John Sutton, Kipkoske, and Labina.
Granger was angered to be billed after Garas.
Kaz Garas was born on 4 March 1940 in Kaunas, Lithuania, as Kazimer Saul Gaizutis. His most recent film is Mean Creek (2004),
