Writer-director Robert N Bradbury’s 1934 The Lawless Frontier is a brisk, pacy, short and intriguing Lone Star/ Monogram studios B-movie Western, in which a pre-A-list stardom John Wayne plays John Tobin, who sets out to clear his name after a Mexican bandit, Pandro Zanti, posing as Don Yorba (Earl Dwire), frame him for some murders, including those of his parents.
Wayne’s old trail pal George ‘Gabby’ Hayes plays Dusty, who helps him against Dwire, who has previously injured him. Jack Rockwell plays the dim sheriff, Luke Williams, who thinks Wayne is a bad guy and arrests him.
Also in the cast are Sheila Terry, Gordon De Main, Jay Wilsey (billed as Buffalo Bill Jr), Tommy Coats, Herman Hack, Artie Ortego, Eddie Parker and Lloyd Whitlock.
