The Lone Wolf in Mexico * (1947, Gerald Mohr, Eric Blore, Sheila Ryan, Jacqueline deWit) – Classic Movie Review 13,046

Columbia Pictures’ 1947 black-and-white mystery thriller film The Lone Wolf in Mexico stars Gerald Mohr as the jewel thief turned private detective Michael Lanyard, Eric Blore as Jamison the Butler, Sheila Ryan, and Jacqueline deWit.

Director D Ross Lederman’s 1947 Columbia Pictures American black-and-white mystery-adventure thriller film The Lone Wolf in Mexico stars Gerald Mohr as the jewel thief turned private detective Michael Lanyard, Eric Blore as Jamison the Butler, Sheila Ryan, and Jacqueline deWit.

Michael Lanyard (The Lone Wolf) (Gerald Mohr) is again the number one suspect when he goes on vacation with his butler Jamison (Eric Blore) to Mexico, where there’s theft and killing, in this plodding penultimate Lone Wolf film episode for Gerald Mohr.

It is a rather tired, weary and disappointing episode, one of the least good in the entire series. The plot and dialogue are as uninspired and repetitive as some of the performances, and the pace isn’t brisk enough. But Eric Blore still entertains, and Jacqueline deWit as Liliane Dumont, one of the Lone Wolf’s old flames, and Sheila Ryan as jeweller’s wife and gambling addict Sharon Montgomery add interest and allure.

Bernard Nedell plays Leon Dumont, Liliane (deWit)’s casino croupier husband, who is murdered. Sharon Montgomery has slipped a valuable compact into Jamison’s coat pocket. So then Montgomery then accuses Lanyard of the murder and Jamison of stealing her compact. Alan Edwards plays another crucial character, Sharon’s diamond merchant Charles Montgomery.

It is written by Martin Goldsmith, Maurice Tombragel and Phil Magee.

It was shot from September 4, 1946, to September 18, 1946 in Mexico.

It is followed by The Lone Wolf in London later in 1947.

Release date January 16, 1947 (US).

Running time 69 minutes.

The cast are Gerald Mohr as Michael Lanyard, Sheila Ryan as Sharon Montgomery, Jacqueline deWit as Liliane Dumont, Eric Blore as Jamison, Nestor Paiva as Carlos Rodriguez, John Gallaudet as Henderson, Bernard Nedell as Leon Dumont, Winifred Harris as Mrs Van Weir, Peter Brocco as Emil, Alan Edwards as Charles Montgomery, Fred Godoy as Captain Mendez, an Jose Portugal as Policeman.
