Director Ralph Thomas’s desperate 1973 British film It’s a 2’6’ above the Ground World [The Love Ban] is a mucky, horribly dated Seventies British comedy, with lots of swearing and back then supposedly ‘daring’ gags, about a couple who take the pill even though they are Catholics and there is a love ban. A rather posh cast is rather down on their luck.
Hywel Bennett stars as Mick Goonahan, a Catholic bra-maker married to frustrated Kate Goonahan (Nanette Newman), who has got six kids already and refuses her husband sex because she does not want any more children. Then there is a girl called Jackie (Angharad Rees) who is pregnant…
It is taken from Kevin Laffan’s play; Laffan appears to have adapted it but there is no script credit. It also stars Milo O’Shea as the priest Father Andrew.
Also in the cast are Russell Lewis, Simon Henderson, Sally-Ann Ferber, Claire McLellan, Nicky Henson, Georgina Hale, Paul Delany, Madeleine Smith, Peter Barkworth, Antonia Ellis, John Cleese, Angela Pleasence, Jacki Piper, Simon Henderson, Marianne Stone and Nina Baden-Semper.
