Cult director Joseph H Lewis’s minor 1942 Universal Studios B-movie horror thriller stars Lionel Atwill as Dr Ralph Benson, the unbalanced doctor who is forced to leave San Francisco and sets off to a remote exotic tropical island in the Pacific where he conducts the most peculiar experiments on the terrified inhabitants. But then the survivor of a doomed cruise shipwreck washes ashore on the island…
With Atwill’s lip-smackingly creepy turn a highly enjoyable piece of menacing grand-standing, and a number of other entertaining turns from the cast, the movie is kind of amusing in its silly way, though very unlikely to chill many people’s spines.
Also in the cast are Nat Pendleton, Una Merkel, Claire Dodd, Anne Nagel, Hardie Albright, Richard Davies, John Eldredge, Ray Mala, Noble Johnson, Rosina Galli, Al Kikume, Milton Kibbee, Byron Shores, Tani Marsh, Billy Bunkley, Wade Botelier, Al Bridge, Lester Dorr, Bess Flowers and Dave Willock.
