Writer-director Sally Potter’s 2000 drama stars Oleg Yankovskiy as a Russian peasant who heads for America, and promises to send for his daughter, Suzie (Christina Ricci). Later, on her way to the US to try to find him, she falls for a gypsy horseman, Cesar (Johnny Depp), and meets the captivating Lola (Cate Blanchett).
A beautiful looking art movie, this is an alluring, colourful, lavishly realised romantic drama with a strong emotional kick in Potter’s screenplay and appealing performances by a choice cast.
Also in the cast are John Turturro (taking over from Robert De Niro as Dante Dominio), Harry Dean Stanton (as Felix Perlman), Hana Maria Pravda, Miriam Karlin, Cyril Shaps, Don Fellows (in his last film), Bernard Spear, David Baxt, Katherine Hogarth, Bridget Clarke and Chris Gillespie.
The actors and musicians who play Cesar’s family are members of the Romanian music group Taraf de Haidouks.
