The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short **** (1966, Senne Rouffaer, Beata Tyszkiewicz, Hector Camerlynck) – Classic Movie Review 10,718

Director André Delvaux’s 1966 Belgian film The Man Who Had his Hair Cut Short [De man die zijn haar kort liet knippen] stars Senne Rouffaer as a middle-aged law clerk whose obsession with a famous actress (Beata Tyszkiewicz), once his former student when he was a teacher, leads to a tragic, painfully detailed breakdown.

Belgian director Delvaux takes an admirably detached view on his subjects, probing all the issues and offering us no easy answers. The result is quite impressive – a gripping psychological thriller and a harrowing essay on obsessive love.

The screenplay by Anna De Pagter and André Delvaux is based on the novel by Johan Daisne.

Delvaux won the Sutherland Trophy at the British Film Institute Awards.

It is shot in black and white by Ghislain Cloquet.

André Delvaux (1926–2002) is best known for The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short (1966), Un soir, un train (1966), Rendezvous at Bray (1971) and Benvenuta (1983).
