Director George Cukor’s 1952 Columbia Pictures black and white movie is an engaging bitter-sweet comedy, with laughs and serious undertones, about the marriage breakup of married couple Florence ‘Florrie’ and Chet Keefer (Judy Holliday and Aldo Ray), who explain their sides of the reasons for divorce to Anne B Carroll (Madge Kennedy). The wise and compassionate judge tries to get them to save their marriage by recalling when they were happy together.
Sharp writing by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, involving, expert performing, and the smoothest of direction by Cukor ensure that the simple story rattles along engagingly and winningly.
Madge Kennedy (1891–1987) was best known as a silent-screen star.
Also in the cast are Mickey Shaughnessy, Sheila Bond, John Alexander, Griff Barnett, Rex Williams, Phyllis Povah, Peggy Cass and Susan Hallaran.
The Drive In cinema was located in Inglewood, California, now demolished.
Tony winner Sheila Bond, who plays Judy Holliday’s sister Joan Shipley, died on 25 aged 90.
