Burt Lancaster stars in the 1974 murder mystery thriller The Midnight Man as Jim Slade, an ex-homicide-cop, released from jail after shooting his wife and lover, who becomes mixed up in a student girl’s murder when he takes a job as a college security guard. Lancaster’s character is soon battling all and sundry to try to find out the truth.
There is a lot of tension, atmosphere and intelligence packed into this pretty satisfying, suspenseful and complex thriller, with plenty to feed hungry fans of mystery and Lancaster.
Lancaster also wrote and produced and directed with Roland Kibbee. Their screenplay is based on David Anthony’s novel The Midnight Lady and the Morning Man.
Lancaster’s son Bill has a cameo as King.
Also in the cast are Susan Clark, Cameron Mitchell, Morgan Woodward, Harris Yulin, Joan Lorring, Robert Quarry, Lawrence Dobkin, Ed Lauter, Mills Watson, Charles Tyner, Catherine Bach, Bill Lancaster, Quinn K Redeker, Richard Winterstein, William T Hicks, Peter Dane, Linda Kelsey, William Splawn, Susan MacDonald and Nick Cravat.
It was shot in February and March 1973 in and around Clemson University campus, , South Carolina, US.
