The New Frontier ** (1935, John Wayne, Muriel Evans, Warner Richmond, Al Bridge, Sam Flint) – Classic Movie Review 7162

John Wayne stars as quick-on-the-draw John Dawson in director Carl Pierson’s very modest, familiar 1935 Republic support Western The New Frontier, in which Wayne’s Dawson character turns lawman to hunt down the man who shot his father in the back after being elected sheriff to challenge the rule of gambler Ace Holmes (Warner Richmond).

It is meagre and minor material, worthwhile really for Wayne fans only, though Al [Alan] Bridge makes an impressive bad guy as Kit, Harry Neumann and Gus Peterson’s black and white cinematography is eye-catching and the long action climax is particularly well done.

Also in the cast are Muriel Evans as Hanna Lewis, Sam Flint as Milt Dawson, Murdock MacQuarrie as Tom Lewis, Allan Cavan as Minister Shaw, Mary MacLaren as Mrs Shaw, Theodore Lorch as Joe, Glenn Strange as Norton, Philip Kieffer as Army Officer, Frank Ball as Ted, Jack Montgomery, Perry Murdock, Cactus Mack, Jack Kirk, Earl Dwire, Chuck Baldra, Fred Parker and James Sheridan.

The New Frontier is directed by Carl Pierson, runs 54 minutes, is released by Republic Pictures, is written by Robert Emmett Tansey, is shot by Harry Neumann and Gus Peterson, is produced by Paul Malvern and Trem Carr, and is scored by Hugo Riesenfeld, Heinz Roemheld, Clifford Vaughan and Abe Meyer.

It is not to be confused with Wayne’s 1939 film New Frontier.
