Director Don Medford’s 1971 routine second sequel thriller brings Sidney Poitier back for the third and last time as San Francisco Police Lieutenant Virgil Tibbs, the upright cop from 1967’s In the Heat of the Night.
This time he is suspended from the force after he links up with the San Francisco vigilantes who have stolen heroin from drug smugglers to provoke the police to action. James R Webb’s screenplay, based on the character created by John Ball, provides nothing new, and nothing very thrilling either. But the goodish cast helps the run-of-the-mill excitements in this adequate Seventies crime thriller.
Barbara McNair returns as Mrs Tibbs. Also in the cast are Sheree North, Gerald S O’Loughlin, Raul Julia, Allen Garfield, Ron O’Neal, Daniel J Travanti, Fred Beir, Bernie Hamilton, James A Watson Jr, Charles H Gray, Jarion Monroe, Billy Green Bush, Maxwell Gail Jr, Ross Hagen, Paul Jenkins and John Lassell.
It is shot by Joseph F Biroc, produced by Walter Mirisch, scored by Gil Melle and designed by James F McGuire.
It follows the classic In the Heat of the Night and the moderate They Call Me Mister Tibbs!
