The Pagemaster is a well-meaning but only modestly engaging 1994 mix of cartoon (directed by Maurice Hunt) and live action (directed by the 1995 Jumanji‘s Joe Johnston) plus a worthy message: ‘Books are good for you!’
Macaulay Culkin plays Richard Tyler, the young boy who shelters from a storm in Mr Dewey (Christopher Lloyd)’s library and in a dream is introduced to the jolly world of adventure fiction, meeting Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (voice of Leonard Nimoy), a fire-breathing dragon and Captain Ahab (voice of George Hearn) and Moby Dick.
Also in the cast are Ed Begley Jr and Mel Harris as the boy’s parents.
This, Getting Even with Dad (1994) and Richie Rich were Culkin’s last movies as a kid. He did not film again till Party Monster in 2003.
Former child star Macaulay Culkin, for ever Kevin McCallister in Home Alone (1990), was 35 on August 26 2015.
