The Perfect Guy *** (2015, Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut) – Movie Review

Director David M Rosenthal’s enjoyable dating-risks thriller boasts good characters, suspenseful situations, lots of mystery atmosphere and excellent performances, plus the required doses of violence, menace and sexuality.

Sanaa Lathan stars as successful lobbyist Leah Vaughn, who has a painful breakup with her boyfriend Dave (Morris Chestnut). She then jumps out of the frying pan and into the fire when she gets passionately involved with charming stranger Carter (Michael Ealy) who seems almost too much the perfect guy to be true. In the Fatal Attraction-style plot, her ex re-surfaces and she has to work out who to trust and who to fear.

Tyger Williams’s screenplay is based on an original titled Valet written by Alan B McElroy, greenlit after the success of No Good Deed (2014). McElroy is credited for the story, and several of his scenes remain.

The film was shot mostly at night with digital cameras and anamorphic lenses, using available light to create the desired mysterious look.
