Director William K Howard’s 1933 drama film The Power and the Glory [Power and Glory] is written by Preston Sturges, and stars Spencer Tracy, Colleen Moore and Ralph Morgan.
The Power and the Glory is the story of self-made business mogul Tom Garner (Tracy), told in retrospect, showing how, as he progresses up the ladder, he becomes more ruthless and less human.
The Power and the Glory is well written but directed with less finesse than one would wish for. However, it is an intriguing predecessor of Citizen Kane, which arguably clearly owes a debt to Sturges’s magnificent script. And Tracy is outstanding and silent star Moore is excellent as his older wife, Sally Garner.
Also in the cast are Helen Vinson, Clifford Jones, Henry Kolker, Sarah Padden, Billy O’Brien, Cullen Johnson, J Farrell MacDonald, James Burke, Mary Carr, Edith Fellows, Mary Gordon, Pat Hartigan, Edward Le Saint, Frank Melton, Tom Ricketts, Russell Simpson, Phillips Smalley, Boris Snegoff, Robert Warwick, E H Calvert, and Frank Beal.
