Director Martha Coolidge’s 2004 romcom stars Julia Stiles as US student Paige, who falls in love with her cute classmate Edvard (Luke Mably), little knowing that he’s really a Danish prince, enjoying a private life as a fellow student in Wisconsin.
Stiles and Mably put the charm into a simple fairy-tale story, with lovely views of Copenhagen and a funny role for Ben Miller as the prince’s guard in America. Miranda Richardson and James Fox also have a ball as the duty-bound Danish King and Queen.
The script by Jack Amiel, Michael Begler and Katherine Fugate is a bit too daft and out of touch with reality, particularly that of Denmark, but the movie is pleasant and appealing otherwise. Is there a happy ending? Our lips are sealed.
