Ashley Hinshaw, Inbetweener James Buckley, Denis O’Hare, Christa Nicola, Amir K and Faycal Attougui head off to the Egyptian desert as an archaeological team and the camera crew tagging along, who are trying to unlock the secrets of a cursed lost pyramid that incarcerates the god Anubis.
What are they thinking? Bad idea! They soon find themselves in deadly danger and being hunted by a terrifying great, big insidious creature and some scary little pyramid monsters afraid of fire.
The eccentric cast do quite well under the circumstances, and these are gleefully Z-grade horror movie ones. It’s cheesy, disposable junk, but sneakily likeable, and enjoyable enough while it lasts, so horror buffs won’t feel too frustrated. Grégory Levasseur directs with enough flair to provide some of the required scares, chills and tension, and it’s a decent production.
And it’s suitably grisly in places, with the expected 15-certificate-style horror violence and bloody images. It’s to Hinshaw’s credit that she makes a fine, feisty, handsome, credible heroine, Buckley is a good sidekick and O’Hare adds authority and weight.
Just to be clear, and set the record straight, the setting of the movie can not be a real place, as no three-sided pyramids exist.
