Director Geoff Murphy’s 1985 post-apocalypse, last man on earth-style film The Quiet Earth is a handsome and involving sci-fi thriller from New Zealand about a scientific researcher named Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) who awakens one morning to find that all human and animal life has vanished.
Scared that it might have something to do with the world-encircling energy grid that he was working on, he sets out to find other survivors, discovering Joanne (Alison Routledge) and Api (Peter Smith).
Based on the novel by Craig Harrison, The Quiet Earth occasionally mystifies and loses its way, but the premise and the tense handling keep this unsettling and eerily haunting movie on the rails.
Also in the cast are Norman Fletcher, Tom Hyde and Anzac Wallace.
