The Quince Tree Sun [El Sol Del Membrillo] ***** (1992) – Classic Movie Review 8822

Director Victor Erice’s 1992 Spanish drama The Quince Tree Sun [El Sol Del Membrillo] is a hypnotic rumination on art and life, taken at an audaciously sedate pace and at considerable length by Erice, who brilliantly espouses a daringly minimalist approach.

It was the winner of the FIPRESCI Prize and the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1992.

Through the sun and rain of autumn and winter, a Madrid painter (Antonio López, playing himself) endeavours to paint a quince tree in his garden before the fruit rots.

The detailed observations are everything. For the first 20 minutes Erice draws you in simply by showing the artist’s meticulous preparations. This extraordinary, beautiful film rivets the attention, provokes thought, and fosters serenity and peace of mind, as well as quiet reflection.

Also in the cast are Maria Moreno, Enrique Gran, Maria López, Carmen López, Elisa Ruiz, José Carretero, Amalia Aria and Lucio Muñoz.

The Quince Tree Sun [El Sol Del Membrillo] is directed by Victor Erice, runs 139 minutes, is made by Maria Moreno PC, Facets Multimedia, Euskal Media, Igeldo Zine Produkzioak and Instituto de la Cinematografía y de las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA), is written by Victor Erice and Antonio López, is shot by Javier Aguirresarobe and Angel Luis Fernandez, is produced by Maria Moreno and Carmen Martinez, and is scored by Pascal Gaigne.
