The 1977 cartoon capers of two mice Bernard and Miss Bianca (voiced by Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor) The Rescuers marked a welcome return to form in both the quality of animation and the story for the Disney Studios. It is directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, John Lounsbery and Art Stevens.
The mice enjoy exciting adventures, sing cute songs, meet exciting characters and vanquish enjoyable villain Madame Medusa (voice of Geraldine Page) in a tale about the Mouse Rescue Aid Society setting off to rescue an abducted girl, kidnapped by treasure hunters.
The song ‘Someone’s Waiting for You’ (Sammy Fain music, Carol Connors and Ayn Robbins lyrics) scored an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
The screenplay by Larry Clemmons, Ken Anderson, Vance Gerry, David Michener and Barry Matinson is based on Margery Sharp’s stories he Rescuers and Miss Bianca.
Other voices are by Joe Flynn, Jeanette Nolan, Pat Buttram, Jim Jordan, John McIntire, Michelle Stacy, Bernard Fox, Larry Clemmons, James MacDonald, George Lindsey, Bill McMillian and Dub Taylor.
In 1999, it was reported that a joker had cut two frames of a nude woman into the film’s master copy, and no one at the studio had noticed over 20 years later when the movie was copied onto video, causing Disney to recall more than four million videos at a cost of £30 million.
The Rescuers Down Under followed in 1990.
The 1977 Oscar nominees in Best Original Song were: ‘Candle on the Water” from “Pete’s Dragon’, “Someone’s Waiting for You” from The Rescuers, ‘The Slipper and the Rose Waltz’ from The Slipper and the Rose, ‘Nobody Does It Better; from The Spy Who Loved Me and the winner ‘You Light Up My Life’ from You Light Up My Life.
