The Revolutionary *** (1970, Jon Voight, Seymour Cassel, Robert Duvall, Jennifer Salt) – Classic Movie Review 7934

Jon Voight gives a strong and convincing performance as the troubled college revolutionary – just called A – in director Paul Williams’s thoughtful, well-acted, understated and intelligent 1970 film The Revolutionary.

Based on his own novel by screen-writer Hans Koningsberger, The Revolutionary is a fascinating time capsule as it encapsulates many of the provocative ideas of the period and details of the radical politics of the time.

It also stars Jennifer Salt, Seymour Cassel and Robert Duvall.

Also in the cast are Collin Wilcox Paxton, (as Collin Wilcox-Horne), Lionel Murton, Warren Stanhope as A’s father, Mary Barclay, Richard Pendry, Alexandra Berlin, Reed De Rouen, Julie Garfield, Libby Glenn, Tucker McGuire, Tommy Duggan, Alan Tilvern, Kenneth J Warren, Reg Cornish, Bill Nagy, Earl Cameron and Bruce Boa. It is the film debut of Jeffrey Jones.

The 32-year old Voight had just become a star with Midnight Cowboy, for which he was Oscar nominated as Best Actor. He won the Best Actor Oscar for Coming Home (1978). He made the The Revolutionary between Catch-22 and Deliverance.
