The Ring [Ringu] **** (1998, Nanako Matsushima, Miki Nakatani, Yûko Takeuchi) – Classic Movie Review 2294

Director Hideo Nakata’s 1998 seminal Japanese horror movie Ringu centres on an infamous mysterious killer videotape that is causing everyone who views it to die within a week.

While probing the death of her friend’s child, journalist Nanako Matsushima rashly sees it to find out if it was responsible for the death, and she’s cursed to die too unless she can unlock the mystery within the seven days.

This original Japanese version of the tale is an eerie and occasionally scary connoisseur’s collector’s item, stylishly and unsettlingly filmed by director Nakata. Hiroshi Takahashi provides the screenplay based on a novel by Koji Suzuki. Also in the cast are Miki Nakatani and  Yûko Takeuchi.

Remade in America as The Ring in 2002. Sequel: Ring 2.
