Alexander Ludwig plays nice 14-year-old American kid called Will Stanton, who comes to rural England and learns he is ‘special’. He is the last of a group of immortal warriors dedicated to fighting forces of The Dark.
Then, with the aid of some helpful, eccentric locals – Miss Greythorne (Frances Conroy), Merriman Lyon (Ian McShane), Dawson (James Cosmo) and Old George (Jim Piddock), all guardians of The Light – Will has to battle a scary pursuing horseman called The Rider (Christopher Eccleston) to gain six signs and stave off some kind of apocalypse. Yes, the world’s future depends on Will, and where there’s a Will, there’s a way.
With plenty of intense action, splashy effects and flashy images, director David L Cunningham’s 2007 family movie is a slick and entertaining fantasy adventure that will surely please its teen audience, even if it betrays the spirit of Susan Cooper’s original novels. Though it is a PG in America, it has a UK 12 certificate since there is some robust fantasy action and some scary images.
It was made in the MediaPro Studios, Bucharest, Romania, and on location in Romania.
