Icíar Bollaín stars as the 15-year-old Spanish youngster Estrella, who heads south in search of answers to her father’s tragic death, in director Victor Erice’s beautifully handled 1983 tale of childhood innocence, The South [El Sur].

The South [El Sur] is directed with great poise and perception by Erice, in a style and spirit similar to his earlier masterly film, The Spirit of the Beehive (1973).

Sonsoles Aranguren plays Estrella at eight. Also in the cast are Omero Antonutti, Lola Cardona, Rafaela Aparicio, Aurore Clément, Francisco Merino and Germaine Montero.

The South [El Sur] is directed by Victor Erice, runs 95 minutes, is made by Chloë Productions, Elías Querejeta Producciones Cinematográficas and Televisión Española, is released by Connoisseur Film (1984) (UK), is written by Victor Erice (screenplay) and José Luis López-Linares (script supervisor), based on the short story by Adelaida García Morales, is shot by José Luis Alcaine, is produced by Elias Querejeta, and is scored by Enric Granados, with Production Design by Antonio Belizón.
