The jolly Nickelodeon kids’ TV cartoon series hits the big screen in director Stephen Hillenburg’s 2004 animated feature The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, as SpongeBob (voice of Tom Kenny) and his starfish pal Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) set off to recover Neptune’s crown and save the main crime suspect, Mr Krusty Krabs (voice of Clancy Brown).
With a sponge as a hero and a cameo from a live-action David Hasselhoff (as himself), this is a winningly surreal cartoon that delivers lots of laughs.
Mr Lawrence voices Plankton, Jeffrey Tambor voices Neptune, Alec Baldwin is Dennis, Scarlett Johansson is Mindy, and Rodger Bumpass provides the vocals for Squidward.
2015 brought a surprise revival with The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.
Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the megahit Nickelodeon cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants, died of ALS on 26 November 2018, aged 57.
