Writer/ director Larry Cohen’s 1985 fantasy comedy The Stuff is an amusing send-up of Fifties sci-fi horror pics, with the engaging, funny performances from a talented cast compensating for the rather uneven writing and apparently careless handling.
An addictive new green, gooey foodstuff is discovered, which crowds go wild to buy. But it goes wild inside them and gobbles up their innards and re-emerges through their orifices.
Paul Sorvino is particularly effective as a military fanatic called Colonel Malcolm Grommett Spears, but Michael Moriarty holds the movie together as a weird industrial saboteur by the name of David ‘Mo’ Rutherford.
Also in the cast are Andrea Marcovicci, Scott Bloom, Danny Aiello, Alexander Scourby, Patrick O’Neal and Garrett Morris.
Cohen bites it all up, gleefully.
