The Supergrass ** (1985, Adrian Edmondson, Jennifer Saunders, Peter Richardson) – Classic Movie Review 10,768

Co-writer/ director Peter Richardson’s 1985 British film The Supergrass stars a hugely impressive array of Eighties TV icons: Adrian Edmondson, Jennifer Saunders, Peter Richardson, Dawn French, Robbie Coltrane, Alexei Sayle, Keith Allen, Nigel Planer, Ronald Allen, Daniel Peacock and Michael Elphick.

Richardson and Saunders play English Westcountry cops who believe Dennis (Edmondson) when he boasts that he is a drugs ring boss involved in a multi-million pounds drug deal to try to impress his girlfriend (French) so she will go on a trip with him.

The Supergrass is a fair alternative comedy from the hugely talented Comic Strip team, who have done better.

The script by Pete Richens and Peter Richardson pushes hard but is weak and slack, and thinly stretched over 107 minutes, though the film is worth it for the cast alone.

Also in the cast are Patrick Durkin, Neil Cunningham, Al Pillay [Lana Pellay], Kevin Allen, David Beard, Rita Treisman and Marika Rivera.

Richardson followed it with Eat the Rich.
