The Truth about Cats and Dogs ***½ (1995, Uma Thurman, Janeane Garofalo, Ben Chaplin) – Classic Movie Review 882

Director Michael Lehmann’s sweet 1995 romantic comedy shows that the course of true love won’t run smooth after successful but plain radio chat show host vet Dr Abby Barnes (played by Janeane Garafalo) gets her lovely neighbour Noelle (Uma Thurman) to impersonate her when hunky listener Brian (Ben Chaplin) asks her on a date.

All three twinkling stars are super in a slick and smashing romcom that really purrs along. Audrey Wells’s appealing script is as bright as a button, getting fresh mileage out of what’s basically the Cyrano de Bergerac situation, and the direction is sleek and perfectly timed. A winner.

Also in the cast are Jamie Foxx, James McCaffrey, Richard Coca, Stanley DeSantis, Antoinette Valente, Mitch Rouse and La Tanya M Fisher.

Director and producer Lehmann is known for Heathers (1988), Airheads (1994), 40 Days and 40 Nights (2002) and Hudson Hawk (1991). Wells is also known for Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), George of the Jungle (1997), The Kid (2000) and Shall We Dance (2004).
