Director John Gage’s 1948 American film noir drama film The Velvet Touch stars Rosalind Russell, Leo Genn, Sydney Greenstreet, Claire Trevor, Leon Ames, Frank McHugh, and Walter Kingsford.
Theatrical melodrama as a Broadway star stage actress (Rosalind Russell) who murders her producer and former lover (Leon Ames) and then has to use all her wits and wiles to deal with the investigation by theatre-buff police captain (Sydney Greenstreet) and with her guilt.
The Velvet Touch is an impressive, classy, British-set period suspense thriller, with a first-rate cast, and a clever screenplay by Leo Rosten with strong dialogue and several surprises. Russell is excellent and Greenstreet is superb.
Leo Genn plays Russell’s new beau and Claire Trevor plays a supporting actress wrongly accused of committing the murder.
