Director Cliff Owen’s 1968 adventure sequel stars Olinka Berova as beautiful young European girl Carol, who is seemingly possessed by the spirit of the long-gone Queen Ayesha of Kuma (She Who Must Be Obeyed), in this rather lacklustre follow-up to the Hammer Films studio’s earlier H Rider Haggard jungle adventure, She (1965).
Handsome hero John Richardson returns from the original as the reincarnated king Killikrates, who is searching for his lost queen. Unfortunately, the exotic Berova (aka Olga Schoberová) is unable to take the place of the delectable Ursula Andress from the original and the talented support cast looks distinctly ill at ease. Other original stars Peter Cushing, Bernard Cribbins and Christopher Lee are also much missed.
The lower production values further undermine the already creaky project. Peter O’Donnell’s screenplay is conveniently based on H Rider Haggard’s sequel novel Ayesha, The Return of She.
It also stars Edward Judd, Colin Blakely, Derek Godfrey, Noel Willman, André Morell, Jill Melford and George Sewell.
Also in the cast are Danièle Noël, Gerald Lawson, Derrick Sherwin, William Lyon Brown, Charles O’Rourke, Zohra Sehgal, Christine Pockett and Dervis Ward.
