The Walking Target *** (1960, Joan Evans, Ronald Foster, Merry Anders) – Classic Movie Review 12,234

Edward L Cahn’s strong and solid 1960 B-movie crime thriller film The Walking Target is one of the last film noirs. It stars Joan Evans, Ronald Foster, and Merry Anders.

Ronald Foster pays Nick Harbin, who is released from California State Prison, looking for the $260,000 he stole in a payroll robbery and hid before he was arrested. The prison warden tells him: ‘You are not only an ex-con, but you are a Walking Target.’ His old girlfriend Sue (Merry Anders) is at the prison gates throwing herself in his arms, and there are also two detectives, Max Brodney (Harp McGuire) and his partner, with orders to follow him.

But Sue and Dave (Robert Christopher) are now a couple, working for local gangster Arnie Hoffman (Berry Kroeger) to get the money. Later Nick finds unexpected romance with Gail Russo (Joan Evans), the widow of his former partner in crime. Gail is working in her family’s restaurant, and slowly warms to him.

The cast are Joan Evans as Gail Russo, Ronald Foster as Nick Harbin, Merry Anders as Susan, Harp McGuire as Max Brodney, Robert Christopher as Dave, Berry Kroeger as Arnie Hoffman, Bill Couch as Thug, Norman Alden as Russo, and James Callahan as Al Kramer.

It is written by Stephen Kandel.

It is made by Robert E. Kent Productions and released in October 1960 by United Artists.

It runs 74 minutes.
