Director Norman Z McLeod’s entertaining 1938 romantic comedy stars the formidable team of Fredric March, Virginia Bruce, Patsy Kelly, Nancy Carroll and Eugene Pallette.
March plays Bill Spencer, a single reporter who tries to expose 25-year-old heiress Joan Butterfield (Bruce) when she flees from her over-protective grandfather and secretly gets a job in her family’s store as a saleslady.
The screenplay by Jack Jevne and Eddie Moran is based on a daffy original story (by the TV variety host Ed Sullivan) and there is plenty of invention and amusement though of course no substance. But it is ingratiatingly played by a host of top actors and comedians.
Also in the cast are Claude Gillingwater, Arthur Lake, Alan Mowbray, Harry Langdon, Etienne Girardot, Robert Armstrong, Irving Bacon, Irving Pichel, Syd Saylor and J Farrell MacDonald.
